Turku has already halved its emission from the year 1990
According to preliminary calculations from year 2020 the emissions were 51% less than a year 1990 (in total 630 kt CO2-ekv / 2020).
Turku turns 800 in 2029. An unforgettable, impactful and sustainable gift would be attaining carbon-neutrality. Turku aims to be carbon neutral by 2029 and climate positive from then onwards. The goal and its accompanying plan are bold and exemplary. The thrust is to inspire, encourage and support climate actions from all areas of the society - individuals, companies, city units, groups, businesses, civil society etc. The plan was developed and is being implemented with the continuous input of all societal stakeholders.
Turku is a city on the southwest coast of Finland, at the mouth of the Aura River in the region of Southwest Finland (Varsinais-Suomi). It is a regional capital and a vital business and cultural center. Turku has a population of 190000, increasing at 0.9% per annum, making it the sixth largest city in Finland. There over 330,192 inhabitants living in the Turku sub-region, ranking it the third largest urban area in Finland.
Bold Imprints towards Carbon neutrality from the (B)oldest City in Finland
Turku’s current climate plan, with one of the most ambitious climate targets-carbon neutrality by 2029- was unanimously approved by the city council in June 2018. One year after, there are already several bold footprints of walking the talk. Some of the bold footprints towards a carbon neutral Turku by 2029 are:
Advanced and sustainable drinking water production
Cities are working together to address climate change in many ways and through different mechanisms and organizations. They are providing data on emissions and reduction targets, sharing best practices on mitigation and adaptation, making city level commitments, and advocating for climate action at national and international levels, amongst others. Cities actively participate in international processes and negotiations. Cities are undertaking these actions through existing city networks, by forming new alliances and by supporting international processes.
